Entity SEO: What It Actually Means Beyond Schema Markup
Schema tells the story; it doesn't verify it
Adding Person and Organization schema to a website is declaring facts, not proving them. Anyone can mark up a page claiming to be a Google Partner — schema markup alone doesn't distinguish a real claim from a false one. Entity SEO is the layer of work that makes those declared facts checkable and corroborated, which is what actually earns them weight.
sameAs and cross-platform consistency
The sameAs property links an entity to its verified profiles elsewhere — LinkedIn, GitHub, an official company page. Its value isn't just having links; it's having the exact same name, title, and description across every one of those profiles. Inconsistency (a slightly different job title on LinkedIn than on the website) makes entity resolution harder, not easier — Google's systems are matching on consistency, not just presence.
Third-party corroboration is the actual trust mechanism
- Directory listings from legitimate, relevant sources (a verified Google Partners directory listing, a Shopify partner directory entry) — independent of the entity's own website.
- A Google Business Profile, which gives Google a second, independently-maintained source for the same facts.
- Genuine backlinks from relevant, credible domains — not purchased links, which search engines are increasingly effective at discounting.
Every one of these exists outside the entity's own control, which is exactly why they carry weight that self-published schema can't.
What still doesn't count, no matter how it's marked up
Fabricated statistics, unverifiable case study results, or superlative claims ("the best," "#1") don't become more credible by being wrapped in structured data — if anything, schema makes an unverifiable claim easier for a crawler to extract and repeat, which is a bad trade if the claim doesn't hold up. Entity SEO done honestly is slower than entity SEO done by inflating numbers, and it's the only version that survives scrutiny.
The realistic timeline
Entity recognition accumulates over months of consistent, corroborated signals — not from a single schema update. The practical sequence: get the on-site schema correct first (see the companion post on Person/ProfilePage/Article schema), then work through the off-site corroboration list above, then let content depth (the pillar-cluster model) accumulate over time. There is no shortcut that skips the corroboration step.
